Authentically Amsterdam

De Baarsjes in Amsterdam-West has traditionally been a genuine working-class neighbourhood. Today, it is home to a wide range of people, which is immediately evident as you stroll around. You’ll find trendy coffee houses and traditional local shops alongside each other. Neighbours line up for sourdough bread from the French bakery or a herring sandwich from the fishmonger. This variety is what makes De Baarsjes such a wonderful neighbourhood.

Look up in De Baarsjes, and you often see the most beautiful architectural details.

The Amsterdam School

When you think of De Baarsjes, you think of the Amsterdam School architectural style. A large part of the neighbourhood was built in this famous style. In the 1920s and 1930s, architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage and others designed this charming neighbourhood. For example, Berlage designed the centrally located Mercatorplein.

‘De Baarsjes is a great neighbourhood. It feels a bit like a village, and there are many creative entrepreneurs here.’

New, with an old soul

Like many working-class neighbourhoods, De Baarsjes had many problems for a long time. But in recent years, the tide has significantly turned here. Old houses have been renovated, and a new influx of homeowners brings a breath of fresh air to the streets, without suppressing the old character. The Jan Evertsenstraat – ‘Jan Eef’ to the locals – and the Mercatorplein are filled with tasteful shops, restaurants and bars. A place where many newcomers will feel at home.

De Baarsjes borders Erasmuspark and Rembrandtpark, where young and old go to relax.

Between Rembrandt and Erasmus

The sandbox in Erasmuspark, along with Café Terrasmus, is a popular meeting place for young families. But Rembrandtpark is also a great base for local residents. Whether you want to work out or have a picnic, the parks are your colossal backyard throughout the year.
